Wrapping up the programme
Wrapping
up the programme
To wrap up this programme
at Haaga Helia University which started in April, 2012 and continued for 12
weeks I want to say that the programme in general was good. In addition, I can
say that we benefited from it and we learned some important educational and
vocational information regarding teaching and learning methods and tasks. We
also found the arranged visits to some schools ,institutes and places were very beneficial.
In fact, I can say that the goals of the programme had been successfully match.
The programme started
with orientation that included the following: welcoming the participants, some practical information,
programme connections to TVTC strategy, the pedagogical principles and working
methods and introduction to vocational pedagogy. We learnt some important facts
and practical information about: social media, teaching and learning, students
with special needs, collaborative methods, on the job learning practice,
assessment of learning and making shadowing.
In addition we learnt some principles of teaching practice and practically we
had preformed lessons in teams. Also during the 12 weeks we made some important
and useful visits and excursions such as city tour in the 2nd week,
excursion to Porvoo in the 4th week, trip to Vierumaki and Jyvaskyla,
trip to luukki National Park and visit to a company.
To conclude, I can say
that during this programme I have learnt many important things and in my opinion,
I think the programme instructors did well. I liked very much the way of
teaching as a team, methods of collaborative learning they implemented in their
classes, ice breaking and wrapping up the lesson that some instructors used.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to instructors, to colleagues and to anyone
who facilitated our affairs in this programme
My teaching practice special reflection
First step of our teaching practice
started with the counselling session by David. We discussed with him what our
lesson would be about, what skills that we might cover, teaching activities
that could help for performing the lesson in a good way. Then, the members of
the them gathered and selected the lesson topic which was ''The Most dangerous
animal in the world'' about 'mosquito'. The 4 members of the ocean team shared
the roles of the teaching practice lesson and each one knew his role. We
started our lesson with exploring the lesson goals and some important instructins by our colleague Mr. Alturki, then Mr. Abdulrahman
presented a video about the 10 most dangerous animals in the world having
participants do some tasks. Then, I presented the reading part which was a
passage about the most dangerous animal. Before reading the passage silently, I
discussed with the participants the types of reading and some pre-reading
techniques. Then, I tried to have them practice the pre-reading technique but
there had been an organizing mistake happened during disrupting papers to
participants. Unfortunately, I think one of our teaching goals had not been
matched. In other words, it is supposed that participants completely practice
those important reading techniques in the reading context but that partially
happened. After that, Mr. Saeed performed the last teaching step which was the
assessment and wrapping up the lesson. Honestly, I feel that the lesson in general
was performed well especially the parts
with my colleagues and I also think that there had been many different skills
covered such as listening, speaking, reading and writing and they are the most
important skills, especially in teaching a language. To be more honestly, I
think I should pay attention to my above mentioned mistake and try to avoid its
occurring again in my classes. I think the best way for preventing its occurrence,
in the future, is by implementing the easiest activity or task. That means to give each group of students a
sheet of paper containing all the paragraph of the passage and discussing them
all with students.

WEEK 11REFLECTION
Furthermore, I want to thank the staff of our embassy (the
Saudi Arabian embassy in Finland) for their generous invitation on Tuesday. They
picked up from the university at 2:00 and took us to the embassy. We spent a
very nice time and enjoyed moments we stayed there. We had a very delicious lunch
there. Also, we discussed very important things with them. Then, left the place
at 5 pm.

WEEK8 REFLECTION
First day of the trip, we meet early in the
morning and boarded the bus from Helsinki to Vierumäki. There we dropped our luggage at the
cottages; there in each cottage 5 persons of our group. The cottages were all
the same design and they were very nice. They were well decorated and they had very
modern furniture. However, shopping and other services were not convenient. In
spite of that, Larse, Ana and Kamal guided us and did their best to make
everything easy. In that day I spent very pleasant time and I did a lot of
interesting activities such as attending a presentation session about Innovative
Ways of Doing Market Research, learning something about golf sport; in fact, I
enjoyed playing this sport, but really it was not easy to play, Sauna and
swimming (in lake and swimming pool). But unfortunately, I did not participate
in this activity, because I do not know swimming. Most participants told me
they enjoyed it. I enjoyed the food, the nature and everything there.
WEEK7 REFLECTION
On the third day of the same
above mentioned week, we met Irmeli and she taught us something about Teaching Practice
plans: teams & topics and Teaching Practice plans: tools for planning and
implementation.
In fact, the class was
very exciting especially the way of worming up, when she put the class into two
groups with iPads and asked students in the two groups to make brainstorming using
the iPad to add to todysmeet. Also, practicing a teaching template in
GoogleDocs was very helpful and could be used in my classes.

WEEK 6, REFLECTION
The 6th week was very interesting week because it had many
different activities that could add more experience to our educational career.
With Irmeli, we started the week in class and she applied many helpful tasks,
about how the content was and what was worth learning represented in the
shadowed classrooms, I had learnt some teaching activities that support aspects
of the learning cycle, good practical tasks about themes of the gallery
run and many other activities that I might use them in my classes.
However, I think it would be more worthfull if there had been summary for the
key points.

WEEK 4 , REFLECTION
Reflection of
week 4
In fact, I had learned that monitoring
and observing peers in the field of teaching is very important and I think it
is necessary for teachers in one school to exchange visits from time to time. Shadowing classes build and create critical
thinking that reflects the advantages and the disadvantages of the teaching methods
applied in a class. Also, shadowing classes help a teacher to improve his/her
teaching activities and offer a teacher enough self-confidence.

His students were very attentive, well prepared
and they actively participated in a collaborative scene. They had been
encouraged by the teacher. This was mainly obvious in his teaching techniques of
browsing students work and moving in class to help them.
Also, he used some important teaching aids,
such as the board, textbook, handouts and the computer. However, one thing I had
observed insufficient in the class was that he did not use the power point or
the documentary camera. I think if he used that kind of teaching tool, it would
be more appropriate and interactive, especially, the class is full of enthusiastic students.
The teacher in his class was serious,
confident and his voice was audible and clear. In short, this lesson was a very
practical business writing lesson in that it helps students build up ability to
write English for specific purposes, which are extremely beneficial for
students in their future working life.

Classroom Observation 3
WEEK 4
Instructor evaluated: Anna Kimberly Date: 24th. April, 2012 (Tuesday)
Course: 12:00 -
13:45 English Business Documents Number of students present: 10
Evaluator(s) Misfer Alqahtani (The Ocean)
The lesson observed was about writing a CV and
a letter of application. The class met
at room 2204. The major task of the lesson was to prepare students to write CVs
and letters of applications as their assignment. The teacher started her lesson by having her
students look at a written CV template reflected on the whiteboard by the
documentary camera and she discussed it with her students, asking them specific
and detailed questions about each part in the template.
From observation, the teacher’s teaching
philosophy in her class can be revealed mainly through the following aspects.
In my opinion, alternative teaching activities are very necessary for the teacher to change his teaching way if he needs that, especially when the students are not attentive and do not participate. So, some alternative teaching activities were urgent in her class.
Second, the lesson was
carefully prepared and the objectives and aims were very clear. As a result,
she was confident and no hesitation during the class discussion or when she
were asked by her students and observers. Also, it had been clear to me through
her discussion that she used the multi-social media with her students and she
had asked her students to be prepared for making presentations about different
cultures. In fact, I could see that the
teacher tried to do her best and she would achieve her goals.

In general, his lecture was
interesting because as I mentioned above he used some useful teaching tasks,
such as pair work, group work and individual work and his students were very
attentive, there had been interaction and he was humor with his students. In
fact, I liked his lecture.
